Sixth Man of the Day: Rabbi Yitchak Dovid Grossman

Anyone who attended the exhibition game between the New York Knicks and Israeli squad Maccabi Tel Aviv this past weekend probably didn’t expect emotions to be running high. The teams aren’t in the same league, the proceeds of the game were benefiting charity, and New York’s got a ton of jews. Smooth sailing, right?

Wrong. Thanks to Pini Gershon, the coach of Maccabi Tel Aviv, the game descended into something much, much different than expected:

According to ESPN, Rabbi Yitchak Dovid Grossman, who was called down from the stands in an attempt to reason with the NBA referees who had kicked Gershon out, had this to say: “I explained that this is not a regular game and the kids are watching and [it’s] important that there will be peace and forgive him. If you forgive him, I can speak to the children and say, ‘You also forgive. If you have a fight, you forgive.’ But he says this is the law, that you must obey.”

From the days of the Talmud to the days of NBA charity games, the Jews are a rational people.
