Sixth Man of the Day: David Stern
As many of you know, we here at the GSF have a soft spot for David Stern, and we’ve enjoyed watching this nebbish, middle-aged Jewish man fight to maintain his tyrannical grip over the NBA for years. And even though the NBA Draft kicks off in just a few hours, that’s not the reason why Stern deserves the Sixth Man of the Day award. Instead, it’s because without Stern even lifting a finger, the NBA is on the cusp of yet another golden age.
The big names involved in trades over the past few days have surprised everyone, and these moves have completely reconfigured the NBA map. Heading into next season, every region of the country will have a championship-caliber team, as the Celtics, Lakers, Spurs, Magic, Nuggets and Cavaliers will all be legitimate contenders. The NBA is becoming more like the NFL, in which even the small markets can thrive, and less like the MLB in which there’s the Yankees, the Red Sox, and the Dodgers…sorta.
All that’s missing in the NBA is for the New York Knicks to field a squad capable of winning more than 25 games. So hopefully Stern will stick around for another two decades to make that happen.
