Sixth Man of the Day: Leroy Smith

Sometimes, it seems, fame can be unfair.  Although Chris Webber was an All-Star in the NBA, most people remember him as the Michigan Wolverine who tried to call a timeout when his team had none remaining.  And Craig Ehlo, a great on-the-ball defender for many years, is most recognizable for being crossed-over by Michael Jordan in yet another defeat for the city of Cleveland.

But Leroy Smith is famous for a very simple reason: he motivized Michael Jordan. Long before Michael was “His Airness,” and long before he was the idol of young athletes around the globe, MJ was cut from his varsity squad in lieu of Leroy Smith. And if there never was a Leroy Smith, we might not have ever seen the greatest basketball player that ever lived.
